Presidents of Armenia, Uruguay Call for International Recognition of Genocide

MONTEVIDEO (ArmRadio)—The Presidents of Armenia and Uruguay Serzh Sarkisian and Jose Mujica adopted a joint statement, urging the countries of the world and the international organizations to recognize and condemn the Genocide committed against the Armenian population in the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

The Armenian side praised Uruguay for being the first country in the world to recognize the Armenian Genocide.
The parties also agreed to continue to expand high-level political dialogue and consultations between Armenia and Uruguay on different levels, to cooperate more actively within the framework of international organizations and assemblies.
The parties stressed the importance of resolving the Nagorno Karabakh issue exceptionally in a peaceful way with the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group based on the principles and norms of international law.
The Armenian side praised Uruguay’s balanced and unbiased position on the Karabakh issue and appreciated the visits of Uruguayan lawmakers to Artsakh.
The parties expressed concern over the ongoing violence in Syria and pledged their support to all efforts targeted at restoring peace and stability in the country.
As part of his state visit to Uruguay, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on July 9 visited Armenia Square in Montevideo. At the Khachkar set up near the square, he honored the memory of the victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, according to the presidential press service.

Serzh Sargsyan said Armenia is interested in developing a comprehensive agenda with Uruguay in politics, trade, economy and culture. The sides indicated the importance of the legal and contractual framework’s expansion.
The presidents said the Armenian diaspora of Uruguay contributes to the development of bilateral relations, while the positions of the two countries on issues of universal significance are in sync with each other, and the fact that Uruguay was the first country in the world to recognize the Armenian Genocide in 1965 is evidence of it.
At the conclusion of the meeting, agreements between the two governments on economic cooperation and on visa-free travel, as well as an agreement on further cooperation were signed. An agreement on cooperation in sports was signed between the Armenian ministry of sport and youth affairs and the Uruguayan ministry of tourism and sports.
Prior to his meeting with Jose Mujica, the Armenian president went to Independence Square in Montevideo and laid a wreath at the Statue of General Jose Artigas.
